The Underground Gym on Simpson Street will be closing after all.
Owner Peter Panetta says after further inspection there are some safety issues that developed following the fire this week in the block the gym is in. The blaze also destroyed the Hell’s Angels clubhouse and the former European Bakery.
The most concerning problem for the gym is a broken water pipe.
Panetta opened the gym so at-risk youth would be able to find a place to work out and stay busy. He is not certain what the future now holds, but is hopeful a new location can be found.
As far as finding a new location goes, Panetta says he’s been offered a building, available in the spring, for $85,000. He adds it’s not far from the Simpson Street site, but wouldn’t give anymore detail.
Panetta also remains stedfast in his commitment of not asking the city for any help.
