The new dean of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine wants to make her mark in several ways.
Dr. Sarita Verma tells us she is excited to be able to build on what has been accomplished already, and to take health care in the north to the next level.
In her opinion that means doing a better job of bringing health care to the people of northern Ontario, especially the Francophone and Indigenous populations, which she calls a “major challenge.”
Dr. Verma also wants to provide more opportunities for young people in the region to get into the medical school to help produce doctors “from the north for the north and by the north.”
She is looking to provide “pathways for education to students who would not normally” pick careers in medicine or health care.
Sarita Verma will start her duties as dean and CEO of NOSM on July first.
