The local National representative for Unifor is extremely pleased to see that Repap Resources has formally expressed an interest in purchasing the closed Resolute Forest Products mill in Fort Frances.
Stephen Boon says a possible re-start would be a huge boost to the region and create more than 250-jobs.
Boon notes the union has had discussions with the company on their start-up plans and he believes there is a general framework in place for finalizing a long-term start-up collective agreement upon the successful sale of the mill.
However, he says in order to ensure the sale can be successfully finalized, it’s imperative that the Ontario government steps up and secures access to sufficient wood supply volumes that have been historically allocated to operating the facility.
Boon is urging Resolute to allow the sale to go through and not demolish the mill and for local MPP Greg Rickford to share that view at Queen’s Park.
