The Northern Ontario School of Medicine is out with its Annual report highlighting the successes of the institution.
The community engagement report is titled “Rooted in the North.”
Dean Dr. Roger Strasser says there are now 194 graduating family physicians, or 94%, practicing in the north.
Strasser says that results in better access to care for some 228,000 people.
He notes more than 90 communities now participate in the education of NOSM learners and the school has graduated 595 MD students since 2009.
135 Registered Dietitians have graduated from the Medical School’s ‘Northern Ontario Dietetic Internship Program’ since the internship began in 2007.
Strasser says there is still room for improvement, stressing there are still many remote and Indigenous communities in the north that are struggling to maintain medical services.
