A demand for answers is coming from Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler over a video showing what appears to be a Thunder Bay police officer slapping someone on a stretcher.
In a statement from NAN, the Chief says “We are outraged by the actions of the officer depicted in the video. We don’t know all the details that lead to this incident, but there is no justification for such violent and callous treatment of a youth in a defenseless position.”
There is also anger from NAN communities across the region.
The statement adds it’s believed the person on the stretcher is a 17-year old, and a student from the Matawa Learning Centre.
It’s also not known why the individual was in need of medical treatment.
