Ontario Provincial Police are putting extra emphasis on catching impaired drivers with their festive RIDE campaign.
It’s also the first since the legalization of recreational cannabis in the country.
Interim Deputy Commissioner Rose DiMarco says the department is ready to deal with motorists who are impaired by cannabis.
She points out it’s not necessarily about stopping and charging as many drivers as possible, it’s about saving lives.
Police also note there is a zero tolerance policy for young, novice and commercial drivers.
DiMarco adds driving impaired by any substance remains a serious criminal offence.
