A good turnout for an overnight fundraiser for Shelter House.
21 people slept outside the shelter in a heated tent to raise money for its programs.
Executive Director Michelle Jordan indicates their first-ever SleepOut For Shelter event was a success.
“We don’t have a tally yet, but some of our top raisers made over $1,000. So we’re thinking it’s probably going to be over $5,000.”
The Shelter official adds the weather wasn’t too cold, but the participants got to experience what it’s like for those who don’t have a home.
She says it encouraged discussions about homelessness in Thunder Bay.
“I know last night, people were really engaged, and they were asking a lot of questions, and they were genuinely interested in what everyone was talking about,” she notes, adding they also encouraged talking about experiences with poverty.
Jordan confirms they plan to run the fundraiser again.
