A group of Confederation College students got a hit of reality when they went searching the beach at Chippewa Park on October 12th.
Shannon Costigan of the environmental agency Eco-Superior says they recently discovered how much wasted plastic was to be found.
“The Lake Superior Plastics Project is designed to connect people in Thunder Bay with their Lake Superior shoreline and have them open their eyes to issue of plastic pollution in the waterways.”
The Eco-Superior official says about a garbage can full of small plastics were recovered during the student excursion.
“As soon as you walked on the beach and looked down, the students noticed all kinds of multi-coloured bits of plastic, a lot of it not really identifiable to what it was, but very clearly plastic.”
The project was supported by the TD Environment Fund.
