A number of residents of the Grassy Narrows First Nation were in Toronto for a vigil that took place at Queen’s Park recently for their former chief Steven Fobister Sr.
He passed away earlier this month due to complications from mercury poisoning.
In the Legislature, Kiiwetinoong M.P.P. Sol Mamakwa asked the government to consider increasing compensation to the community.
“Will the Minister of Health commit today to compensate everyone in the community of Grassy Narrows and the others that are affected by it for the ongoing impacts on their health and livelihoods?”
Mamakwa is also asking the provincial government to go on record confirming Fobister died as a result of mercury poisoning.
